Swiss Rescue is deploying to Venezuela with 80 members and eight REDOG search and rescue dog teams. They will search for and rescue earthquake survivors trapped in the rubble. Departure is planned for tonight.

Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, just 39 seconds apart, causing widespread destruction and triggering a nationwide state of emergency. Rescue teams are searching for survivors trapped in the rubble.

International aid has been pledged, including from the USA and several Latin American countries. Switzerland has also signalled its willingness to help.

The earthquakes were so powerful they were measurable in Switzerland – seismometers of the Swiss Seismological Service clearly registered the tremors.
